Drug rehabilitation services usually attend to four types of conditions. These are:

Each of these conditions requires a unique treatment approach. Not every California drug rehabilitation center is capable of addressing all of these issues.

What does this mean?

It means that some rehab programs offer medical detoxification, some do not. Other rehabs may be adept at dealing with addiction and chemical dependency, but are not skilled in the treatment of substance abuse.

The key is to locate a drug rehab that offers an array of treatment services, so that your specific condition can be treated effectively.

Types of Drug Rehabilitation Services

There are two basic types of drug rehabilitative services offered in most California drug rehabilitation centers. These are:

Behavior Modification Treatment

This type of treatment is moderately to highly effective in treating people who are experiencing chronic addiction or habitual chemical dependency (i.e., individuals who have a criminal history, crack addicts, long-term intravenous drug users). This approach centers on offering program participants integration into a 12-step program. It also focuses the majority of the treatment process on group therapy. This kind of program tends to be larger than other modalities. The treatment philosophy in the program is to "break a person down to build them back up." This approach tends to center on confrontational counseling and peer influence. In other words, residents are often graduated to become counselors and senior residents offer constructive feedback to new residents in order to provide them with insight about perceived negative or recovery detrimental behaviors.

Clinical Treatment Services

This type of treatment is highly effective in treating alcoholism, addiction and substance abuse. This approach is also the most successful method to treating people experiencing dual diagnosis. This type of treatment focuses on providing program participants with a lot of individual therapy. Group therapy is a component of the process, but groups are facilitated by licensed professionals vs. senior residents. The treatment philosophy in this method centers on assessing participants for the presence of underlying psychological or psychiatric issues. This allows people to understand more about why they are behaving the way they are, instead of viewing addiction or substance abuse as their only problem. The provision of new coping mechanisms, non-habit forming medications and therapy are all applied according to the persons needs so that the possibility of relapse can be significantly reduced. Clinically based rehabilitation programs tend to be smaller than behavior modification programs. The process also tends to be a bit more dignified than the confrontational style incorporated by behavior-mod structures.
