Opiate Addiction PDF Print E-mail

ARC, West Los Angeles  California

Opiate addiction almost always carries with it the need for detoxification. At ARC we provide onsite medical detoxification utilizing the most advanced medical protocols available. (We utilize Subutex, Suboxone or Buprenorphine based on client need) Our staff of physicians, nurses and nursing assistants helps each client to be kept comfortable and safe during the withdrawal period. Clients undergo detoxification in a dignified environment with clinical support readily available to address their early psychological needs. Prior to admission, a preliminary assessment determines what measures will need to be immediately taken upon arrival at the facility, assuring each client that preparedness and empathy await them as they begin their personal process of recovery. If you or someone you know needs treatment for opiate addiction call 877 415 HOPE to receive the help you need today.

Opiates are derived from the alkaloids found in opium, an extract from the seed pods of the opium poppy. The term opiate has traditionally referred to natural and semi-synthetic derivatives of morphine. The term opiate does not correctly refer to all drugs with opium or morphine-like pharmacological action. These drugs are more properly classified under the broader term opioid. The similarities in both the opiate and opioid families’ pharmacologic effects cause clinical treatment of them to be fairly universal.

Some of the drugs that are classified as opiates or opioids and are treated by ARC because they often result in addiction are:

  • Heroin
  • Talwin
  • Opium
  • Darvon
  • Vicodin
  • Codeine
  • Demerol
  • Fentanyl
  • Dilaudid
  • Percodan
  • Morphine

Although the initial introduction to opiates or opioids may be as a pain management medication, the tolerance building effects and euphoric qualities of the high can often lead the unsuspecting user into opiate addiction or opioid addiction.

As often as they are appropriately prescribed; opiates and opioids are illicitly used. Most of the above drugs are manufactured in pill form. The easy nature in which they can be consumed makes them more socially acceptable and their consumption very easy to hide. Consequently they are often introduced initially as a party “topper” or work “reliever.” Before long tolerance builds and it takes more and more of the drug to achieve the same euphoric effects. As a strong central nervous system depressant, opiate and opioid consumption can often lead to overdose and death. The pill forms that are so readily available make the drug easy to mix with alcohol and other drugs. The resulting biochemical reactions can be extremely dangerous as the compounded affects of multiple substances cause the body to arrest involuntary functions, such as breathing and heartbeat.

Opiate Addiction Treatment with ARC is Effective and Unique

Successfully treating opiate addiction and/or opioid addiction begins with onsite medical detoxification but this is simply the first stage in the ongoing recovery process. When opiates and opioids are involved in the addictive process of our clients, we have found that one of the most effective measures in helping clients to achieve sustained recovery is to continue to treat the post-acute withdrawal symptoms of the drugs. These post acute symptoms include; sleeplessness, depression, fatigue and anxiety. Our medical post-acute detoxification procedures, which are ongoing throughout treatment, help each client to recover from these subtle after-effects. This attention allows clients experiencing opiate addiction and opioid addiction to truly focus their attention on the clinical portion of the program which is designed to address the underlying psychological factors that have contributed to the unique circumstances of their addictive process. Our treatment philosophy includes personalized treatment planning that concentrates on the individual challenges each client might experience as they begin the journey into opioid and/or opiate addiction recovery. Additionally our program curriculum offer education, relapse prevention, experiential therapy and outside activities designed to promote enthusiasm on the ongoing road to recovery. For more information about the program see Primary Care, Continuing Care and Extended Care.
