ARC, West Los Angeles  California

Prior to intake in the substance abuse program at ARC each client receives a preliminary assessment that outlines the immediate medical, personal and social needs that are required by the personal circumstances surrounding the admission. Our onsite medical detoxification services are usually the first step in the treatment process and once detox has been concluded the actual substance abuse program can begin.

At ARC our substance abuse program is designed to address two main issues:

  • What clinical factors have contributed to the substance abuse issues?
  • What steps need to be taken to immediately arrest the pattern of abuse?

To effectively answer these questions each client is assigned both a primary clinician and a primary substance abuse counselor. This allows each client to use clinical sessions for therapeutic purposes and to engage with their substance abuse issues with their substance abuse counselor. Ultimately 30 days of treatment is just the blink of an eye. To use the time more efficiently this separation of clinical therapy and abuse counseling means that each client can get the help they need.

The ARC substance abuse program philosophy is to impart to each client a personal understanding of what underlying issues have contributed to the negative forms of self expression defined by their own substance abuse tendencies. During therapy sessions the methods employed are specific to each clients specific treatment needs. Some of the methodologies we utilize during daily individual sessions are:

  • Grief Therapy
  • Trauma Therapy
  • Somatic Therapy
  • Analytical Therapy
  • Reflective Therapy
  • Insight-Based Therapy
  • Reason-Based Therapy
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

The primary care substance abuse counseling sessions are also provided daily and include; individual drug and alcohol counseling, addiction education, experiential therapy and outside activities that help to promote client enthusiasm during early recovery. Our focus during individual counseling sessions is on:

  • The Disease Model
  • Trigger Identification / Relapse Prevention
  • 12 Step Education
  • Building Coping Mechanisms
  • Recovery Principles

Each client’s primary clinician works with the primary substance abuse counselor to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses the individual present and future needs of the client that will be necessary to support sustained recovery.

While undergoing treatment we determine whether a client is suffering from substance abuse or substance addiction. This is important because it ensures that the substance abuse program will be further tailored to meet the specific circumstances of each client’s unique situation. Interruption of the abuse pattern can prevent addiction from fully developing and once an individual becomes addicted the likelihood is that they will only embrace an addictive lifestyle if they relapse or use again. So it is important to approach each substance abuse or addiction situation with the truth of its ramifications. Treatment for addiction is fairly straightforward but treatment for substance abuse often has to be conducted with more subtlety. If appropriate care and concern is taken in treating substance abuse issues there is a chance that much of the collateral damage incurred by a full-blown addictive process can be forever avoided.
