Southern California is one of the regions in the United States where there are many, many options for drug rehabilitation. In fact, there are so many drug rehabilitation centers located in California that it can be difficult to research and choose the best drug rehabilitation setting for yourself or a loved one. Determining which drug rehabilitation center in Los Angeles is the right one for you really proves how arduous the process of California drug rehabilitation research can be – because in Los Angeles alone – there are nearly 490 alcohol and drug treatment centers located within 50 miles of the city itself! The good news is there are some basic and helpful tips you can apply when attempting to choose the best drug rehabilitation setting in Los Angeles. STEP ONE The first step is to learn a little bit about drug rehabilitation… General definition of drug rehabilitation: Drug rehabilitation generally refers to the treatment of addiction and/or substance abuse issues – usually in a residential setting. However, drug rehabilitation is also an umbrella term that can be used to define the treatment of addictions, substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders – again, usually in a residential setting. Why the above is important to know: This is important because it points out that not all of the drug rehabilitation centers in Los Angeles also specialize in treatment for co-occurring disorders. If you need treatment for both addiction/substance abuse and a co-occurring disorder then you can narrow down the number of treatment centers you research before you even begin the process. STEP TWO The next step is to think practically about what type of drug rehabilitation center in Los Angeles you want to attend. Here are some of the questions that you can ask yourself: Question one Why question one is important: This is an important question because some drug rehabilitation centers in Los Angeles treat upwards of 30 people at-a-time. Usually, treatment centers that offer drug rehabilitation services to that many people at once struggle when trying to create individualized treatment plans. Additionally – if you need support and attention – a larger treatment environment is probably not the best fit for you because limited availability of staff logistically prevents you from receiving the type of support you may need. Question two Why question two is important: The obviousness of question two is somewhat evident in that if you need onsite medical detoxification services it is important to ask the drug rehabilitation program whether or not they offer these services. Not all drug rehabilitation programs, particularly in Los Angeles offer onsite medical detoxification as a component of their program. This would mean that if you do need these services you would first have to detox in a hospital or other drug and alcohol treatment program before you enrolled for drug rehabilitation. This is particularly difficult to do because trying to enroll in drug rehabilitation is hard enough already and it’s usually best that if you need to detox that you find a treatment setting where these services are included. Question three Do you want to be in a single room, a double-room or a room with more people while in a drug rehabilitation program?
Why question three is important: Believe it or not some drug rehabilitation programs in Los Angeles put as many as 5-10 people in a room. You will always be in a room with the same gender but still having that many people in a room can prove difficult – especially when you start to look at how the lavatory situation and bathing facilities are structured. Although it is not unusual to be in a drug rehabilitation center with one other person in your room there are actually program settings where you can be in your own room. It’s important to decide what living arrangements are realistic for you prior to enrolling for drug rehabilitation treatment. Question four Why question four is important: Many drug rehabilitation programs in Los Angeles do not offer offsite activities. This means that once you enroll in the program you will not leave for any meaningful period of time during your stay. This creates a bit of a challenge in two respects. The first is that you might begin to feel a bit claustrophobic or shut off if you don’t have the opportunity to get off campus for an entire 30 days. The second is that although you may do very well while in the drug rehabilitation program you might find yourself somewhat “shell-shocked” or overwhelmed when you actually do leave the center. This can create a sensation of social anxiety that might lead you to relapse unnecessarily shortly after leaving the drug and alcohol treatment program. Question five Why question five is important: Not all programs in Los Angeles offer therapy as a component of the program. Many drug rehabilitation centers do offer individual sessions – but often these are only with a substance abuse counselor. If you want the more professional type of attention offered through individual therapy than it is important to ask if you will receive individual sessions with a therapist or psychologist while in treatment. Question six Why question six is important: This is important to determine on the back of question five. It is important to decide how many sessions you hope to receive on a weekly basis while in a Los Angeles drug rehabilitation program. Many drug treatment programs in Los Angeles only offer 1-2 individual sessions per/week. This is really not that much individual attention when you consider the length of time you will actually be in treatment. Question seven Why question seven is important: Most programs in Los Angeles do offer some sort of family program as a component of drug rehabilitation. The problem is that these services are usually offered to many family members at one time. In other words, 10-15 families will get together with program staff and conduct a family-style group with 1 or 2 group facilitators and this can really limit the amount of attention and time individual family members will receive. A few drug rehabilitation programs in Los Angeles offer individual family services. If family services are important to you – this type of family program is probably more suitable to your needs. Please Note: There may be several other questions you would like to ask the Los Angeles drug rehabilitation program you would like to attend. These questions are personal but the aforementioned should be a good start in terms of thinking logistically about the modality of the drug rehab center you will attend.
