Drug Addiction Recovery

ARC, West Los Angeles  California

The purpose of enrollment in a drug rehab is to obtain drug addiction recovery. Recovery has many meanings and is often a misunderstood word when it relates to “drug addiction” recovery. Does it mean complete abstinence? Does it mean stopping destructive patterns of drug use? Does it mean getting something we lost back?

For the treatment team at ARC, drug addiction recovery is all of these definitions and more. We believe that drug addiction recovery is the process by which we learn how to embrace lives of fulfillment, passion and enthusiasm in a new clean and sober lifestyle. We believe that true recovery can only take place when the underlying issues that have fueled our negative forms of self-expression such as the addictive process are understood and resolved. Recovery is the process by which we acknowledge parts of ourselves that are no longer working while working to create new responses to the stressors of daily living. It’s a process filled with honesty, open-mindedness and a willingness to change.

To really obtain and sustain drug addiction recovery we have to understand, in some capacity, the complexities of developing drug addiction. ARC is committed to addressing and treating all the relevant aspects of how we have developed drug addiction in the first place. Some of the information that we impart is:

Drug addiction is a disease that has two relevant components:

  • Physical dependence
  • Psychological dependence

Drug addiction is characterized by behaviors such as:

  • Cravings
  • Compulsive use
  • Continued use despite harm
  • Impaired control over drug use

Drug addiction is brought about and influenced by environmental factors such as:

  • Genetics
  • Social Circumstances
  • Historical Experiences

At ARC, recovery begins with discovery. Once onsite medical detoxification has concluded each client works with their primary clinician to answer two basic questions:

  • What personal issues have contributed to the manifestation of the addictive process?
  • What steps need to be taken to arrest the addictive process?

Answering these fundamental questions helps the clinical team formulate a personalized treatment plan for each client. This treatment plan, coupled with individual therapy, educational and clinical services provides a comprehensive treatment approach to lay the foundation for drug addiction recovery to begin. Identification of these issues is a primary focus during Phase 1.

Phase 1 (Primary Care) is designed to promote insight and awareness which leads to resolution of the psychological mechanisms fueling the addictive process. It also allows the center to place the client in supportive services during aftercare so that treatment can continue along the guidelines initially established. Recognition of these core issues helps to eliminate emotional surprises in early recovery. Certain responses are expected and prepared for versus hoping that “it will work itself out.”

ARC understands that drug addiction recovery is an ongoing process. We offer the opportunity for clients to continue treatment after primary care in Phase 2 (Continuing Care) and Phase 3 (Extended Care).

Phase 2 allows clients to continue to work on the underlying issues that have contributed to the addictive process. The clinical support of Phase 2 allows each client to take small steps towards resolution of difficult issues while in a safe, compassionate environment. This level of care is extremely helpful for clients with co-occurring conditions as the travel the path towards sustained drug addiction recovery.

Phase 3 helps clients process the feelings and emotions surrounding transition back to a daily recovery routine. Vocational training, Educational pursuit’s placement and life skills training are coupled with continued clinical care so that drug addiction recovery can be maintained. Extended Care is crucial in cases where clients haven’t learned basic life skills because of their history of addiction.
